Notorious BIG - Party & Bullshit

Remember the opening post of this blog? Probably not, I hardly do myself, but I do remember promising putting up some hiphop. So far the focus has been on disco a lot, nothing wrong with that, but now it's time for a little change with this post, time to party! Notorious BIG is of course one of the all time greatest mc's, there's just no doubt about that. Hearing him just makes you want to get up, especially on this track.

His album Ready To Die is pure classic stuff from the intro to the dramatic ending. The follow up album Life After Death was alright, but in my opinion couldn't touch the raw quality of the debut album. This track right here isn't on either album, but it is from the Ready To Die-era and you can hear it. Biggie sounds so agressive and uplifting. Just play it and you'll hear what I mean.

The Place: Home...done with work, sick of the computer, ready for down time, after hours, thoughts of relaxation on the mind. Music: press play, set the volume, preset #2, dont forget to plug in the subwolfer. Chill on the sofa, sinks in the middle. Highs, mids, lows, it all flows, let the music take you somewhere else. The sounds: a pimptastic bassline and chords, a sliding drum beat, visions of city at night, street lights, the spot, visions of ladies dancing, not a fast dance but a groove, a sexy 1, 2 step. I've been here before, looks familiar, music pics up. There she is... enter the Westchester Lady. She whipsers to me...what did she say? Pick up the what.....pick up the phone?

Oh snap...I must have drifted off to sleep...heh, wow, music can take to some stange places. Check the caller I.D.,sigh...stupid telemarketers.

What up my peoples, I think alot more people look at this blog than I first thought. Well, I hope this Bob James tune trips you out as much as it did me.... Ok, maybe not that much.

And you sit by your speaker, hand on the mouse, soon... as you hear it, pump up the volume. Dance with the speaker 'till you hear it blow, then plug in the headphone 'cause here it go.

It's a 4 letter word when it's heard it control your body to dance, you got it...SOUL

Alright, that was pretty cheesy, but I didn't really know what to say about this track, just that it's awesome and by far the best on the otherwise mediocore Gangbusters album.

The year: 1981. The man: Alphonse Mouzon. The music: Wheres the music? Que the strings, the horns, the sax, the bass, the drums, and the soul sisters. Oh how we love you soul sisters. Put it together and begin to dance. Lose yourself in this sound someone named disco. Forget about all the crap that's going on and just vibe, chill, spin out, and feel good for five minutes and ten seconds. Is that to much to ask? I didnt think so...

The year: 2005. The people: A bunch of young music heads blessing each other with gifts for the ears and the heart. Could care less about race or language, and share this wonderful thing called music. What music?: Once again Alphonse Mouzon. Discovered by way of sample hunting.(Downloading mixes, Emailing DJ's, & consulting with friends) But, is that so wrong.....isnt that the point, the music. Isnt the music, like this track here, the "jewl" behind every sampled house track. Yes, I say. A "jewl" indeed.

Tantra - Hills Of Katmandu (Patrick Cowley Megamix)

Okay like I promised, some italo disco today. I'm not a big fan of the genre, but some tracks stick out, this is kinda close to regular disco anyway. Another reason to like it would be Patrick Cowley's name on it. This genius producer is of course well known for his legendary mix of Donna Summer's I Feel Love. I feel this remix is kinda overlooked, for it's almost as good, I wouldn't say just as good, but pretty damn close! My favorite part of the track is definetely that hypnotic vocal that comes in after about 3 minutes or so. Jeff Mills even liked it so much that he built an entire track around it.

Tantra were an Italian disco band who made a disco album that's popular amongst collectors called The Double Album. On this occation Patrick Cowley's mix is actually shorter than the original, which lasts for over 16 minutes. The 12" with this mix on it can be pretty hard to find.

Alright, here's something I always enjoy. Talking in records. You know, it kinda gives you the idea like you're at a party or something. Some examples:
-Marvin Gaye - What's Going On
-George Duke - I Love The Blues, She Heard Me Cry
-Moodymann records like Forevernevermore

And here's another one. With the typical 'hey what's happening brother' lines and all that. Apart from that nice dialogue in the start, this is just a wonderful track. I've been playing it all week, so I figured I might as well share it with y'all. Enjoy!

The Ballad Of Daft Punk

Prince - The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker

Yet another Prince track? Hell why not, the guy deserves it. Besides, this track's kinda funny to hear, as it seems Daft Punk took some heavy inspiration from it for Short Circuit, a track from their Discovery album. Maybe a tribute of sorts?

Exhibit A: They did a tribute thing on the album before with the Supertramp-like breakdown in Digital Love. Very smooth. Let's hope the One More Time vocal wasn't a Cher tribute though.

Exhibit B: Those drums at the start of Human After All remind of Prince as well. And this Prince track starts with a little drum roll at the start, like Short Circuit does.

Exhibit C: I remember them being very enthousiastic in an interview with a Dutch music mag when the reporter asked if they were influenced by Prince for Discovery.

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I rest my case. Now forget about all this b.s. and just enjoy this wonderful track! :)

Let me paint you a picture. The day, last Saturday. The time, 5:15 sunset. The place, Richmond. The music, The Players Association - Turn The Music Up. The rides, a 95 Camron (Toyota Camry) and a 97 Infin-it (Infiniti I30t). The people, me and my bro. Just got the cars washed and we try to think of a good spot to snap some pics. The music is bumpin as I roll down 95 with my brother, we cruise at a good pace, switching lanes, diggin' the scene with a gangsta lean, and things of that nature. Random tunes fly from the cd-rw, house, funk, soul....house. Players Association - Turn The Music Up comes up and takes me back to 79. I was born in 82 so thats an amazing trip. Enjoy.

As I just heard, legendary jazz musician Jimmy Smith passed away yesterday. So in honour of him, here's a wonderful track from an LP he recorded with Wes Montgomery titled: 'The Further Adventures Of Jimmy and Wes'.

I said in the opening post that you could expect music ranging from soul, jazz and disco. Well Pleasure throw it all together on this exceptional track. Some jazz influenced solo's over a typical soul beat start this gem that ends with some disco style strings.

French house legends Motorbass sampled those string from the outro for the intro of their 'Miami Remix' of Daft Punk's Around The World. I'm actually still looking to find both the Joyous album and the limited edition Around The World 12" that has the Motorbass remix on it. Feel free to e-mail me if you can help me with that last one, I'm sure I'll come by the Joyous album in the crates some day. Don't hesitate to grab it yourself when you see it somewhere, you won't be dissapointed!

Pop Life

Prince - Pop Life

This is probably my favorite track from the 'Around The World In A Day' album which wasn't received that well in the press, compared to other Prince albums of that era. Of course the album also features the classic Raspberry Baret, but I find this track just as moving, very nice lyrics as well.

I'll try to keep the site fresh with a couple updates every week, so feel free to come back some time and remember, the files will only be online for a week!
